Hi there!

So good that you’re here… It’s time to get started! We’re going to dive right in and start creating our first video with the Tuesday prompt.

Today it’s all about creating a time-lapse with video footage. What is a time-lapse? A time-lapse is text missing

I believe that we should just start creating. If you wait until you’re “ready”, whatever that means, you might never start. Going through the process of starting, editing, and finishing a video will provide you with many learnings that you can take on to the next video.

Think about what kind of short story you want to tell.

Show a process that would take too long to show on video, speed up a video that shows an ongoing process that is more interesting when shown quickly, or show something that evolves when you speed it up.

Here are some examples to boost your creativity and imagination:

This is Adrienne painting on a Canvas. By speeding it up, it shows the whole process beautifully without having to show a 30-minute video, and you can see how it evolves from 2D to 3D.

Here is another time-lapse video with a really cute story behind it:

My 6-year-old daughter loves helping me create videos and she’s become really good at it. I explained the whole task to her and while we were recording, I realized that we were running out of time and that I had to run some errands. She was convinced that she could finish the video herself… and this is what she created:

That’s exactly what it is all about, right? Just start, otherwise, you might never! Next time she’ll know how to spell the word for sure!

Another great idea for a time-lapse is the beautiful scene of a sunrise, a sunset, the change of weather, and so on.

So now I ask you to create your own time lapse. Here are a couple of ideas. Film yourself while:

  • Working on your computer

  • Clearing your storage room

  • Cleaning up

  • Sorting flowers

  • Painting a picture

  • Cooking

Are you ready to create your own time-lapse Reel?

This is what you need:

  • Your smartphone camera on time-lapse mode

  • Optional: The app Hyperlapse. It gives you more control over your video and is very easy to use, it’s free. Watch this tutorial to see how it works:

Here’s what you need to keep in mind:

The most important thing to consider when creating a time-lapse is to keep your phone steady. There are many creative ways of keeping your phone steady:

  • Place it on a shelf

  • Stick it to a window/wall

  • Clamp it between two books

If you’re ready to invest in a tripod, here is a great option: In my experience, the gorilla pod is the best small tripod. It has flexible legs and can be placed anywhere or attached to anything. It’s good value for money, is lightweight, and fits in every bag. Having said that, there are many great quality tripods on the market. Check them out and purchase what you think works best for you.

How to create a time-lapse video:

  1. Try not to get lost in the details. The idea is to just get started, practice makes perfect!

  2. Open your smartphone Camera app and choose the time-lapse mode

  3. Start recording.

  4. When you’ve finished recording, head over to Instagram Reels and select the video from the camera roll. As you can see, the speed of the video has already been adjusted. If you’ve created the video in the Hyper-lapse app, you will find the exported video on your camera roll too.

  5. Optional: Add music, a title, a filter…anything to spice it up a bit and give the video your own spin. But this is certainly not a must! The cool thing about Reels is that it has a built-in music library which is the preferred platform for music use. Reels are short-form content and line up with the agreements made with rights holders. The down side? Reels are solely designed to be posted on Instagram. You cannot share, post or repurpose them on any other platform.

Not sure how to create the Reel and post it? Watch this tutorial here:
